UFC 93 Quick Thoughts

Overall is UFC 93 provided a night of very good fights. They were all entertaining in some manner. For a card with none titles on the line and two so-so co-main events, it truly delivered as an action packed night.

Marcus Davis Vs Chris Lytle
Davis and Lytle got us started in what many, including myself, thought could be the fight of the night. These two did not disappoint. I was shocked that this one did not finish but that is a testament to these two fighters.

Jeremy Horn Vs Rousimar Palhares
Again, I would have never guessed that the judges would decided this one. That is prior to that first round turned in by Palhares. After that first round, who would have seen Horn hanging out. Horn is a veteran and showed a ton of heart to just stay in the fight. It would have behooved Palhares to be able to finish the overwhelmed Horn but a dominant win is a dominant win.

Alan Belcher Vs Denis Kang
More shocking incidences here. Belcher, a BJJ purple belt, catches Kang who is a highly acclaimed BJJ black belt. Kang shoots in and Belches is waiting with a guillotine choke of his own. Belcher just took a big step up in the middleweight division.

Mark Coleman Vs Mauricio Rua
How in the hell did this get co-fight of the night honors (with Davis-Lytle)?!? That is insane. This was a shitshow. It looked like this fight was being shown in slow motion. Coleman looked 44 and Rua looked 54. This might as well go down as a loss for Rua; although word is that Rua will be facing Liddell at UFC 97.

Rich Franklin Vs Dan Henderson
This fight went as I expected. Franklin got some good combinations on Hendo. However Hendo's immovable chin combined with his wrestling and dangerous striking proved to be enough to win the fight. Up next, The Ultimate Fighter season 9 with Coach Henderson vs Coach Bisping.

Final Thoughts Moving Forward
  • After the Coleman-Rua crapfest, Coleman has the balls to say he deserved a rematch. Although Rua couldn't have looked much worse he still was in no danger of losing this fight.
  • I wonder what the plan is for Franklin (from both his and the UFC's perspective). Will he move back to 185 or stay at 205?
  • I would assume that the winner of Bisping-Henderson will be in immediate contention for the middleweight strap aka Anderson Silva.
  • Belcher-Palhares on the horizon? Could be a great contest.
